Scene #1: Last Night

Welcome, welcome, welcome to a new Feature here at A Twitchy Mind! Surprised? Well, I suppose I can’t blame you. Nevertheless, here we are. Lately yours truly has been doing some playwriting work, and as a part of that has been writing up several short scenes featuring characters, sets, and plots of all sorts. Needing something to actually POST from time to time, I figure I’d inflict these little scenes upon you, for your reading pleasure or displeasure.

First up is ‘Last Night’, a short two-and-a-bit pager. Despite the fact that drinking makes you forget the events of the night before, beware of those with better memories or restraint than yourselves . . .

Webcomic Spotlight #3: Kid Radd

Posted in Features, webcomics with tags , , on August 20, 2008 by shay88

Okay, let’s be honest, regular updates were a fairytale dream. Nevertheless, here we have the third edition of Webcomic Spotlight with a rare breed: a finished comic. Not too many of those out there, as many comics are either still ongoing or fall apart long before they reach the end. If they’re even meant to have one. But Kid Radd, a ’sprite’ comic by Dan Miller that is found at http://kidradd.com/, is an especially unique piece of work even among those scant few complete webcomics.

Webcomic Spotlight #2: Alpha Shade

Posted in Features, webcomics with tags , on June 7, 2008 by shay88

After a short hiatus due to a rebellious laptop, the Spotlight is back! Last time we took a look at the rather well-known Sinfest, a comedic strip. This time we’re going to check out a much more serious comic with Alpha Shade by Chris and Joe Brudlos, available at http://alpha-shade.com/

Technical Difficulties of the Worst Kind

Posted in Announcements with tags on June 4, 2008 by shay88

So, what the hell happened to Webcomic Spotlight? And why haven’t any new Features been added? For that matter, why has A Twitchy Mind done so little twitching as of late? The terribly simple answer is that computer access has been severely limited, with a home computer in complete rebellion and a laptop that shies away from the internet for reasons unknown. Only the good fortune of free computer access in a local library has allowed me to make this post.

Despite the delay, rest assured that within the week several posts will be made. The Spotlight will return to its schedule, and we’ll also be looking at several plays on the Broadway stage that have caught my eye. See you then!

Non-Fiction: Summer Long Gone

Posted in Non-Fiction, Writing with tags , , , , , on May 13, 2008 by shay88

Another year of education done with. Even the stubbornest Maine snowbank vanished into thin air weeks ago, and although spring has been short the weather is fantastic now. As students struggle up and down the stairs with their belongings, emptying out the rooms they’ve called home for months, summer is finally beginning.

But it’s not really the same, is it? Summer’s just another busy part of the year now,  usually starting with job searches. Some take extra courses over those three months, some travel, some are even doing internships for their majors. The rest of us, most of us, knuckle down to those job searches and try to find a way to scrounge money together for the next school year, always with an eye on the spare change you’ll be able to use for yourself instead of overpriced textbooks.

Remember the summers when you did nothing, and yet still managed to do so many different things. Camping, biking, visiting theme parks, swimming at the beach, just hanging out with friends and being quite possibly the laziest living being ever. No job, no extra courses, no internships, not a single thing. Summer was your time, when you could do what you wanted. Three whole months to unwind from the school year, and if you had summer reading it got done the last week before school started so that it didn’t interfere with your good time.

Webcomic Spotlight #1: Sinfest

Posted in Features, webcomics with tags , , , on May 2, 2008 by shay88

The internet has caused a boom in the self-publication of creative works, and the same goes for comics. So, roughly every other Friday here at the Mind I’m going to shine the spotlight on a webcomic that I believe stands out from among the (rather large) crowd. First up on the plate is Sinfest by Tatsuya Ishida, available at http://www.sinfest.net/

“Welcome!” and “GTA IV Madness”

Posted in Announcements, Video Games with tags , on April 30, 2008 by shay88

Welcome to A Twitchy Mind, WordPress blog of myself, shay88. Here at Twitchy Mind I’ll be publishing my thoughts on the world (specifically focused on things such as video games, the internet, movies, T.V., and such, with intermittent rants on the various parts of reality) and some of my own work. I’m a fiction writer, and I tend towards science fiction and fantasy, but you’ll see some literary fiction stuff as well. Maybe even a poem or two, if I’m in the mood. I hope the things I have to say are interesting.

Now for the meat of the first post, I figured that I should address something to with the present, and with the aforementioned video games. Yes, you’re going to hear another rant about GTA IV. I apologize if you’re sick of hearing about it, but it’s news.

Grand Theft Auto. Say those three words and chances are people won’t think of the actual crime. Instead, they’ll think of paying a hooker and then beating her to death with a baseball bat to get a refund. Maybe shooting some cops along the way, hopefully not getting too many stars, or else the army shows up. Maybe they’ll just think of porn.
